  1. Keep It Clean
    Have your fireplace professionally cleaned at least once per year to avoid many of the fire threats common with a fireplace. The chimney sweep will get into the fireplace and chimney to remove soot, creosote and glaze caused by fires. Of these three--creosote is the most dangerous. These deposits, left by wood that doesn't burn completely, will build up in the chimney and lead to fire. Creosote is highly flammable and attaches itself to the walls of the chimney waiting for the right conditions for a fire.
